Dan took his hobbies very seriously. If he decided to invest in something, it was down to the last detail. Any hobby that Dan would invest his time in was the thing that each of Dan's friends also had to invest in. So was his cycling hobby. hobby? Sorry, I meant Dan's bike religion.
It's hard for me to pinpoint the specific moment when Dan came to be heavily addicted to cycling, but sometime in 2009 while I was still living in Los Angeles, he convinced me to buy my first race bike because 'there is no better place than Los Angeles to ride a bike. As with anything Dan was interested in back then, he had knowledge that from my point of view seemed like infinite knowledge.
In general Dan was "the best" in everything he touched. He was the most loyal, the most serious (even very, very), the most invested, the most ambitious, the best husband and father in the world, and yes - even the most extreme sometimes ..
Before each of its attributes one can insert the word "best."
Although we started traveling separately, I'm in LA and he's in New York, but that gave us another major topic of conversation in our conversations. How long is the train? where? How are the landscapes?
When I moved to New York in the summer of 2010 I felt that Dan's little wish had come true - we'll finally get out of the car together. Before every weekend, he called me to plan the next ride. We set out for 100+ mile rides that started at 6-7 in the morning and ended around 12 in the afternoon. Of course I enjoyed the ride itself, but I enjoyed much more spending time with Dan and pleasing him on a regular basis.
The common bicycle saga in New York lasted for several years with dozens and possibly hundreds of joint rides.
I've not been on a bike since Dan was killed.
